Flare Nut and Brake Pipe Spanners
Brake pipe unions are a classic trap.
A normal open-ended spanner only contacts part of the fitting. On an old, soft or corroded union, that makes it much easier to round the corners and turn a straightforward hose replacement into a brake pipe repair.
A flare nut spanner wraps further around the fitting while leaving a slot for the pipe to pass through. For regular brake work, it deserves a place in the drawer beside the ordinary spanners rather than being treated as some exotic specialist tool.
