Comfort is not the only reason workshop temperature matters.

They make most sense in:

LPG performance in very cold weather
Another practical consideration is cylinder performance.
As LPG vaporises, the cylinder cools. With high gas demand in cold conditions, pressure can fall and the cylinder may appear to “freeze up” or struggle to supply the heater at its intended rate.

Buying a heater without estimating the heat requirement is guesswork.
Floor area alone does not tell the whole story. A 50m² garage with a low insulated ceiling is much easier to heat than a 50m² steel unit with a six-metre roof, draughty doors and little insulation.
A useful first-pass calculation from the research for this guide is:

Imagine a workshop measuring:

Volume:
30 × 20 × 10 = 6,000 cubic feet
With average insulation:
6,000 × 5 = 30,000BTU/hr
Convert that to kilowatts:
30,000 ÷ 3,412 = approximately 8.8kW
That immediately tells you something useful. A 2kW fan heater is unlikely to heat the entire building effectively in cold conditions, whereas equipment around the 9–10kW mark is at least in the right region for further assessment.
Do not treat this calculation as a substitute for a proper heat-loss assessment where the heating requirement is critical. Large doors, wind exposure, glazing, roof construction, ventilation rates and desired indoor temperature can all move the real requirement significantly.
A poorly sealed roller shutter can undo a surprisingly large amount of heating work.
How Much Does a Workshop Heater Cost to Run?

The heater’s purchase price is only half the calculation.
For electric heating, the rough running-cost maths is refreshingly simple:
Heater output in kW × electricity price per kWh = maximum hourly energy cost
If your electricity costs 25p/kWh, for example:

Those are illustrative figures, not current Jawel Tools running-cost claims. Commercial energy tariffs differ substantially, and thermostatically controlled heaters will not necessarily draw their full rated heating load every minute.
The useful part is the formula. Put your own electricity rate into it.
With propane, diesel or kerosene equipment, compare the heater’s specified fuel consumption per hour against the current cost of the correct fuel. That gives a much fairer comparison than trying to label one fuel “cheap” and another “expensive” in isolation.
A high-output heater may cost more each hour but warm a workshop far more quickly. Conversely, running a huge heater all day to warm one workbench is rarely clever.
Workshop Heating Safety: What Really Matters
Heating equipment deserves the same respect as lifting gear, welding equipment or any other piece of workshop machinery.
The risks change according to the heater.
For electric heaters
Check:
- the voltage and phase required;
- socket and circuit capacity;
- cable condition;
- whether extension leads are suitable for the electrical load;
- clearances specified by the manufacturer;
- that air inlets and outlets are unobstructed.

For propane, diesel and other combustion heaters
Pay particular attention to:
- ventilation;
- fuel storage;

- servicing and burner condition.
A carbon monoxide alarm is a sensible additional layer of protection where relevant, but it is not a substitute for correct ventilation or correct heater installation.
For fixed commercial gas-fired forced-convection heating, BS 6230:2011 remains the current British Standard covering the installation of gas-fired forced-convection air heaters for commercial and industrial space heating.
Commercial installations should be assessed and installed by suitably competent professionals rather than relying on generic spacing rules from an internet article.
Can You Burn Waste Engine Oil to Heat a Workshop?
This crops up surprisingly often in garages because, on the surface, it sounds perfect: the workshop produces used engine oil, so why not burn it for heat?
Legally, it is not that simple.
Government guidance classifies small waste oil burners as small waste incineration plants. Where waste oil has not met the relevant end-of-waste criteria, operating such equipment requires the appropriate environmental permit under Schedule 13A of the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
Permit charges and requirements change, so check the current position with the relevant local authority rather than relying on an old fee quoted online.
For most ordinary garages looking for straightforward workshop heating, conventional approved fuels such as kerosene, diesel or propane are far simpler than trying to turn waste lubricant into heating fuel.
How to Make Workshop Heating More Efficient
Before buying a bigger heater, look at where the existing heat is going.
1. Deal with draughts first
A badly fitting roller door can leak heat almost as quickly as the heater produces it.
Door seals, gaps around personnel doors and damaged cladding are relatively mundane jobs, but fixing them can make a dramatic difference.
2. Heat occupied zones
If two technicians are working in one end of a large unit, heating an empty storage bay at the opposite end makes little sense.
